Chronic pain affects approximately 20% of the U.S. adult population. Our nation's opioid epidemic has spurred interest in nonpharmacologic options to assist with managing pain. Psychological interventions for chronic pain can reduce or eliminate the use of prescription opioids and improve patient functioning and recovery, and the U.S. Pain Management Best Practices Inter-Agency Task Force has recommended educating patients, clinicians, and the public about the role of psychological pain management interventions and expanding access to these services.
The Psychological Pain Management Training developed by the American Psychological Association, was held on April 23 for Oklahoma psychologists which addressed building the nonpharmacological pain management workforce in Oklahoma. In this training nationally recognized experts provided behavioral healthcare experts with a strong understanding of the biopsychosocial nature of pain and the use of psychological and behavioral approaches to address chronic pain in adult populations.
In connection with this training, the Oklahoma Psychological Association and the American Psychological Association are hosting a separate forum on psychological pain management for federal, state, local, and private sector policymakers on Friday, April 30 from 10 a.m. - 11:30 a.m. virtually. The forum will feature an overview of evidence-based psychological pain management interventions and their potential role in patient care, as well as a discussion of policies affecting access to these services. We also strive to have a manufacturing component to address the ongoing needs of intervention options for this workforce demographic.
